It’s not all about the winning

I live in Phoenix, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals football team. Karl, my life partner, is from Philadelphia. We went to the playoff game this weekend. He wore his Philadelphia Eagles hat. At the end of the game, there was a pile of cups, not all completely empty, that Cardinals fans threw at him. Where’s the love man?

We like rooting for the winning team and harassing the “others.” I listened to Obama’s inspiring call to action today in the form of his inauguration speech. It made me feel proud to be an American, and gave me hope that we could once again be seen as the winning team.

My hope is that we don’t harass the “others” as we take not only his words, but his emotions filled with compassion, inclusion, and possibility with us into the world. For me, I plan on using these words to help focus all my business conversations.

By raising the flags of compassion, inclusion and possibility, I do think together, we can change the world.

Humm………so sorry about the thrown beer cups inexcusable. I too am from Scottsdale AZ and cheered my heart out with pure disbelief actually that we won ! We watched the game in the safety and convenience of our home but it would have made me very sad to see someone treat anyone with such disresepct. Bummer. I am still a bit jealous that you got to see it in person ! We tried but no luck.
My Mom (white in her 70′s)called Michelle Obama “that gal” when looking at a newspaper leading story….just an hour before I watched 45 black women all about my mom’s age get off a plane from DC. It hit me that those women wearing with pride thier Obahma shirts (pink no less)would reference Michelle quite differently. THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL TIMES…it will be interesting to watch us all experience them differently.
