3 Signs of Stress to Watch Out For

Harvard Business Publishing puts out a Management Tip of the Day. They are easy to read with good suggestions for managing yourself as well as others. You can sign up to start receiving your own copy. I liked today’s post so much I thought I’d share it with you. I’m guilty of the last one, thinking I’m the only one who can do the job right! I’m learning how to back off.

3 Signs of Stress to Watch Out For

The recession has taken an emotional toll on all of us. Watch out for these signs of stress:
1. Working too hard. When times are tough, we tend to double our efforts. Putting in 10-hour days will not save your company from the recession — it will tire you out and render you ineffective.
2. Loss of self. Stress can cause us to withdraw or do things out of character. If you’re losing your personality or skipping things that used to be important to you, step back and evaluate your stress level.
3. Delusions of grandeur. We all like to think we’re important. However, it is unlikely that your job directly affects the fate of your entire company. Keep your role in perspective — taking a break won’t break the company.

Number three rings a loud and clear bell to me! Stress, gloom, and recession aside, once in a while when I get just a little too high on my horse, I back down and remember “You CAN be replaced, young lady. Maybe not immediately, but ultimately there would be others who could take over your job – and happily so.”
However, and this is getting off on a tangent all its own, we all are important in our own unique way – I recently read a proposal that the highest good of all was not personal health (many people will say it’s nothing if you don’t have good health), but rather discovering and reaching the purpose we were put here on earth for. That could be best using our talents within our job, raising a child, saving the life of someone else, or, as the thinking goes, risking our health to achieve said purpose.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. In fact, finding your purpose is Chapter 10 of my book! I’ve been frantically writing and not posting…I promise to get to that soon.
